It’s trivial

7 06 2006

Invited to trivia by an acquaintance-turned-friend, in that wonderful way that happens sometimes.

Team of five. New friend, friend of friend met once before, two randoms, and me.

Me. Keen to make a good impression. These seem like nice people, Sherd. Not born-again Christians hellbent on conversions, not into Tupperware, not racist rednecks, not just out of high school.* Beer drinking, music listening, crap talking late-twenties to early-thirties think science is cool in an ironic way types. Just relax, be yourself, all is well.

Round Two questions are about 2006 song releases.

Two things you may not have known about me:

1) I love trivia. More correctly, I love to win trivia. It’s really not the best side of me. Especially for a first impression. “Hi, nice to meet you, I think the answer is botulism, not cholera, BOTULISM, WRITE IT DOWN OF COURSE I’M RIGHT I HAVE A FUCKING DEGREE IN MOLECULAR BIOLOGY BITCH.”**

2) The average Saturday morning will see me in a variety of poses on or around the couch, with some type of music video show on. This used to be Rage without a question. Lately, Video Hits has been better. Wtf? But I digress.

What to do? Give in to the dark side, show my tragic knowledge of the top 10 and risk losing any shred of credibility or hope of friendship I had left after the botulism thing?

What do you reckon?

The winning answers were:
1. Rihanna
2. Shakira
3. U2 and Mary J Blige
4. Bernard Fanning
5. The Veronicas
6. Gnarls Barkley
7. Lee Harding***
8. Delta Goodrem****
9. Kanye West
10. Pete Murray

10 out of 10, thank you very much!

They’ve asked me to come back and trivia it up with them again. Just as soon as they remove any sharp objects from the pub. Bless.

* These are all groups of people I have spent some time with in the last six months. They weren’t kidding when they said life’s tough in the big city.
** I was right. HECS well spent, I say.
*** I pretended not to know this one. Even my competitive streak has its limits. Even though I did know it. Which is possibly worse.
**** Happily for my soul, I didn’t actually know this one.

I have seen the competitive Sherd in full flight and it is a magnificent beast. Aggressive, determined, confident, and a bit scarey. But still ridiculously nice. I don’t think you have anything to worry about babe.

Its oK Rocketeer, I understand. There are stupid people, walking around, being stupid, they dont even know they are stupid. Sometimes they play trivia. Somtimes (…sigh) we are asked by stupid people to be on their stupid teams. Stupid people do not realise they are stupid, or that Trivia is a blood sport. …sigh..Stupid people,…walking around……don’t even know they are stupid………

OK – seeing as we are all admitting to things that are bad involving commercial music (well, Sherdy is anyways) – I too have been suckered in by the commercial crap fest that is Video Hits. It seems that Rage is playing the same songs at that time of morning anyway, so I tend to flick between the two.Sadly, I recognise all those names, can guess what songs they were, and jus tmight have got 10 out of 10 too. OMG – who have I become!!!
