President of TV program production firm to resign over bogus natto diet show

The president of a television program production company is set to resign over a show that falsely claimed natto, or fermented soybeans, helps people lose weight, company officials said.

Japan Television Workshop President Naoyoshi Furuya has expressed his intention to take responsibility for the incident.

“We feel grave and serious social responsibility. We apologize to viewers and those involved,” a statement released by the company said.

The company’s in-house fact-finding committee is trying to get to the bottom of the incident, the officials said.

The TV show, “Hakkutsu! Aru Aru Daijiten II,” produced by Japan Television Workshop and aired by Kansai Telecasting Corp. on Jan. 7, promoted the health benefits of eating natto. However, it has been revealed that the show was fabricated.
